Hybrid e-invoices

Reading ZUGFeRD and Factur-X PDFs

Many suppliers send a PDF that looks normal in a mail client but carries the legal invoice as embedded XML — ZUGFeRD and Factur-X work this way. Skrolla pulls the XML out, parses it like an XRechnung, and shows the same readable breakdown.

Why the PDF alone is not enough

For EN 16931 compliance the structured XML is the original. A printout of the visual PDF is not a substitute for archiving the file with its embedded data for the retention period.

Hybrid files attach XML under names such as factur-x.xml or zugferd-invoice.xml. Skrolla searches associated files, PDF streams and raw bytes — documented as best-effort because generators vary widely.

What you see after extraction

Once the XML parses, you get the same view as for a bare XRechnung: parties, number, dates, lines, tax subtotals, payment details. Download a readable PDF for your records; the archive keeps the original PDF bytes and extracted XML together in IndexedDB.

  • Factur-X MINIMUM through EXTENDED profiles reported from BT-24
  • Plain PDF invoices without embedded XML are rejected — there is nothing structured to read
  • Parsing runs entirely in your tab; files never leave the device

Limits Skrolla is honest about

Skrolla does not replace a Steuerberater or validate a supplier’s tax treatment. It reads the structured data and flags arithmetic that does not add up instead of silently showing wrong totals.

This page summarises public rules as Skrolla understands them for 2026. It is not tax or legal advice. When money or doubt is involved, ask a Steuerberater.
